June 5 2017 is gonna be a red-letter day for India in the field of space research as ISRO is gearing up to launch the heaviest rocket ever in its history —The humongous 640-tonne GSLV-Mk III at 5.28pm from Sriharikota,AP. It is as heavy as 200 fully grown Asian elephants

This being a completely indigenous rocket will be a major fete of self-reliance for the country.

It took about 25 years, 11 flights and over 200 tests on different components of the rocket for it to be fully realised.

It’s first developmental flight, D1, will carry GSAT-19, a communication satellite, when it lifts off.

This will be the first time India will be attempting to launch a four-tonne satellite using an indigenous launch vehicle.

And also this could pave way for India's first manned mission. It is capable of carrying humans into space. If the launch is successful, ISRO plans to seek Rs 12,500 crore from the centre to send Indians to space after flying them from India in an indigenously manufactured rocket. Till now, only a handful of countries have attempted sending astronauts into space. These include: Russia, USA and China.
